It would be amazing to be a billionaire. Don’t you want to be a billionaire? I know I do. It would be awesome to buy anything you want, maybe corrupt a democratic election or two, it sounds like a blast.
So how do you become a billionaire? Drop out of university. That is what Mark Zuckerburg and Bill Gates did. Boom, easy, just follow that one easy step and you will be a billionaire like them.
Maps, what are they good for?
We all know this map, it is the map of the world.

It is called the Mercator Projection. It was created by the Flemish geographer and cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569. This has become the default map of the world. It was helpful for navigation and it represented north as up and south as down. It does maintain the shape of the landmasses but because it tries to preserve local direction it has a side effect of making objects bigger the further they are away from the equator.
This makes Africa looks small and Greenland looks enormous. This map tries to present the world but distorts it.

They are presenting an inaccurate map.
An Accurate Map
This map is called the AuthaGraph World Map and it was created by Hajime Narukawa

It isn’t as pretty as the Mercator Projection but it is vastly more accurate. Greenland, Antarctica, and the Americas are much smaller and Africa is way bigger.
Little New Zealand is still small but some things don’t change.
We see the world based on the maps we are presented with. When we are presented with the wrong map we draw the wrong conclusions about how to get from point A to point B.
Deadpool
The film industry is notorious for taking the wrong lesson.
Deadpool was great because they tried to tell the story the best they could and to do that it required an R rating. The studio thought people liked R rated comedies.
Any time there is a popular film the industry tries to copy the map that was created but they don’t have an accurate map.
Most of the time, good films are good films because the creators and artists tell an interesting story in an interesting way and create some emotional connection. This can be a small robot left to clean up the earth (Wall-E) or an old grizzled mutant trying to right some wrongs (Logan).
Your Take Away
Don’t follow the maps people set out. They can be guides but they aren’t to be followed. Your journey is different from their journey.
Take from their stories lessons you can apply to how you think about your situation but don’t use their logic to answer your questions.
Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerburg did both drop out of school to become billionaires, but they were both going to Harvard, which means they have certain advantages, be that contacts, money, intelligence to you.
It also doesn’t tell the story of every other Harvard dropout that didn’t become a billionaire.
Learn about how people think, not what they think. Make your own map.
