Marcus Aurelius, the Emperor of Rome, lord of all of his known world, was getting on in years, was seen walking down the street with a tablet in hand. He is asked where he was going. “Learning is good, even for a man growing old. I am going to learn what I do not yet know from Sextus the Philosopher.”
Even with all the power in the world, all the money, resources, and power, he wanted for nothing, he still knew he had things to learn and more growth was possible.
It showed the character of the man that even he, the all-mighty Emperor, could learn and was excited to do so.
Big Wide World
The world is forever changing, what you knew today might be slightly wrong tomorrow. The environment around you is changing and you need to change with it.
People older than you might have some wisdom on how to look at a problem. Some people younger than you might have interesting new takes on what is happening around us. Or an old person could have fresh new thoughts and some young people are wise beyond their years.
The world is changing, so we must, and that requires…
Learning
Being in charge doesn’t make you right, it also doesn’t make you a leader, it just gives you authority so that people have to do what you tell them.
Even though your authority makes you right, but not correct, there is a huge difference, it doesn’t mean that everyone on the team can’t teach you something or see the world in a certain way to broaden your perspective on how you approach a problem.
If you show the desire for learning and curiosity it will reveal more about your character than making the final decision on a project.
